Munich Airport is advancing technological innovations to streamline operational processes in collaboration with the Lufthansa Group and the jointly operated Terminal 2 company.
Since mid-October, a remote-controlled passenger bridge has been undergoing a six-month pilot test. The trial focuses on evaluating performance under various real-life conditions, including weather impacts and obstacles in the stairway’s driving path, using a specially modified passenger bridge. In the future, all passenger bridges are expected to feature advanced control systems. Beyond the remote-controlled solution, the implementation of a fully automated, AI-powered control system is also being explored for Terminal 2.
During the pilot phase, the passenger bridge is operated remotely from a temporary control center housed in a container. Initial test runs involve a mock aircraft to simulate real-world scenarios. The successful collaboration with Spanish specialist DIMAIM has already yielded positive results in these initial trials.
Another notable project at Terminal 2 is the introduction of an unloading aid for the baggage handling system. This innovation enhances the efficiency of luggage and freight processing by facilitating the transfer between baggage carts and the claim belt. By minimizing the need for manual lifting, the system significantly reduces physical strain on employees working in operational areas.
