Now, Asia-Pacific Aligns With North America, Brazil, China, Middle East, and Europe in Leading May 2025 Global Air Passenger Demand Growth: What IATA Reports Say You Need To Know

The latest IATA data for May 2025 highlights strong growth in global air travel, with Asia-Pacific, China, Brazil, and the Middle East leading the way.

Global demand for air travel increased by 5% compared to May 2024, with significant contributions from China’s domestic travel, Brazil’s robust recovery, and the growing air traffic between Africa and Asia.

While North America saw a slight 0.5% decline, driven primarily by a drop in U.S. domestic travel, the overall international and domestic markets showed promising signs of recovery across multiple regions.

Among the various regions, Asia-Pacific saw the most significant growth, with a robust 9.4% increase in passenger demand. This was driven by continued recovery in international markets, with China and India leading the charge in domestic travel. The Middle East also performed strongly, with a 6.2% year-on-year growth in demand, bolstered by growing traffic between Africa and the Middle East, with Africa-Asia being one of the fastest-growing international corridors, expanding by 15.9%.

Latin America experienced an 8.5% increase in demand, with Brazil and other countries in the region benefitting from ongoing economic recovery and increasing consumer confidence in air travel. Conversely, Europe and Africa showed more modest growth, with demand up 3.4% and 7.5%, respectively. The biggest surprise came from North America, where demand fell by 0.5%, largely due to a slowdown in the U.S. domestic market (down by 1.7%) caused by economic factors and reduced government travel.

On the international front, global demand for international air travel grew by 6.7% year-on-year. The Asia-Pacific region led with a 13.3% increase in international demand, followed closely by Latin America with an 8.8% increase. The Middle East saw a 6.2% rise in international traffic, while European carriers experienced a 4.1% increase. However, North America’s international demand showed only a 1.4% increase, signaling slower growth compared to other regions.

The increase in international demand was tempered by slower traffic expansion on key international routes to the Americas, especially in the Transatlantic market, where growth remained modest at 2.5%. This slower expansion on major international routes highlights the competitive pressures and capacity challenges that some airlines face in meeting the growing demand for global travel.

Looking at domestic markets, global domestic demand increased by 2.1% year-on-year in May 2025, with China leading the pack, showing a 7.4% increase in domestic travel. The United States, on the other hand, faced a 1.7% decline, reflecting a weakening demand in the domestic market, particularly following a dip in government travel and the ongoing economic slowdown.

Other countries such as Brazil and India showed positive growth, with Brazil’s domestic demand increasing by a remarkable 18.3%, continuing its strong recovery since early 2023.

In India, domestic demand increased by 3.1%, although it was impacted by a decline in load factors, particularly in domestic Japan (down by 1.1%). Australia, Japan, and Europe showed more modest increases in domestic demand, reflecting the global trend of steady growth but at varying speeds depending on the region.

The data also highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by geopolitical instability, particularly in the Middle East. Recent disruptions in late June, although having minimal impact on passenger inconvenience, serve as a reminder of the vulnerability of air travel to such events. This instability, coupled with fluctuations in oil prices, remains a critical factor for airlines to monitor, as low oil prices in May 2025 helped keep costs manageable for carriers, but volatility in energy prices remains a threat to the sustainability of air travel growth.

The May 2025 global passenger demand figures demonstrate a solid recovery across most regions, with Asia-Pacific and Latin America leading the charge in growth. However, regional variations indicate some challenges, particularly in North America and certain parts of Europe, which face economic headwinds and slower growth in domestic markets. While the global air travel industry continues to face geopolitical instability and economic uncertainty, the overall outlook remains optimistic, fueled by strong consumer demand and forward bookings.

With the Northern summer season approaching, airlines are poised to capitalize on the continued growth in air travel, particularly on international routes, with regions like Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East driving much of the demand. The airline industry will need to remain agile to manage capacity and ensure that disruptions, both external and internal, do not affect passenger experiences.
